What Is a White Sturgeon?

The white sturgeon, commonly referred to as the Pacific sturgeon, is a member of the ancient sturgeon family. This freshwater species has existed for millions of years and is known for its size, resilience, and biological uniqueness.

White Sturgeon Habitat and Distribution

In our country, sturgeon species are primarily found in the Black Sea basin, where three to five different sturgeon species have been documented. White sturgeons prefer freshwater systems but can tolerate brackish environments, making river deltas and estuaries important habitats.

Physical Characteristics of White Sturgeon

White sturgeons are among the largest fish species in the region. Under suitable environmental conditions, they can reach lengths of 2–3 meters and weigh up to 150 kilograms. Unlike most fish, white sturgeons do not have traditional scales. Their elongated bodies are covered with smooth skin, and their skeletons are composed mainly of cartilage.

Diet and Feeding Behavior

White sturgeons are bottom-feeding fish with a diverse diet. They feed on small fish, worms, crustaceans, and various aquatic invertebrates. The sensory barbels near their mouths help them locate food along the riverbed, even in low-light or nighttime conditions.

Lifespan and Biological Significance

One of the most remarkable traits of white sturgeons is their longevity. When environmental conditions are favorable, they can live for several decades and may reach up to 100 years of age. This long lifespan has made sturgeons an important species in both ecological and historical contexts.

Conservation Status and Protection

White sturgeons face significant threats due to overfishing and habitat degradation. To ensure the survival of the species, strict conservation measures have been introduced. In our country, fishing for all sturgeon species is completely prohibited. Worldwide, approximately 30 sturgeon species have been identified, many of which are legally protected.

Why Are White Sturgeons So Valuable?

Sturgeons are highly valued for their roe. Black caviar, produced from sturgeon eggs, is considered one of the most exclusive and valuable delicacies in the world, contributing to the historical and economic importance of the species.
